Have Your Say on safer, inclusive streets for Mitchells Plain and Strandfontein

The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate is calling on residents and stakeholders to help shape our investment in universally accessible, safe non-motorised transport (NMT) infrastructure along key corridors in Mitchells Plain and Strandfontein. The project, which is focused on Spine Road and Strandfontein Road, is designed to ensure safe and dignified mobility for all, including pedestrians, wheelchair users, the visually impaired, cyclists, and those pushing prams. The public comment period is open from 16 September to 17 October 2025. Read more below:

The infrastructure is proposed for Spine Road and Strandfontein Road along the following sections:

• Spine Road: between Swartklip Road and Strandfontein Road
• Strandfontein Road: between Spine Road and Strandfontein Pavillion

The scope of the project will include:

• Upgrading and maintaining NMT facilities and ensuring facilities are universally accessible
• Upgrading and installing dropped kerbs and tactile ground surface indicators for the visually impaired
• Upgrading pedestrian crossings by shortening the crossing distances, improving signage and road markings
• Introducing protected cycle lanes where applicable

‘We’re building a safer, more accessible Cape Town for everyone who walks, wheels, or cycles, and right now we’re focusing on Mitchells Plain and Strandfontein. This infrastructure is designed for all residents, especially vulnerable pedestrians such as wheelchair users, children, the elderly, and people pushing prams or carrying heavy loads. We’re calling on local residents to help shape these plans. Join us at the upcoming community information sessions to view the designs, meet our project teams, and share your input. Together, we can create streets and spaces that truly work for everyone,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

All are invited to the following information sessions:

• 16 September 2025 from 15:00 to 18:00 at the Tafelsig Hall, 115 Kilimanjaro Street, Tafelsig
• 17 September 2025 from 15:00 to 18:00 at the Oliefantshoek Community Centre, corner of Bokkeveld Avenue and Oliefantshoek Streets, Tafelsig
• 25 September 2025 from 15:00 to 18:00 at the Rocklands Civic Centre, Lancaster Road, Rocklands
